Prior employment: Ascom AG 9
yrs. (1987 - 96)
British
Telecommunications PLC 7
yrs. (1981 - 87)
Plessey
Telecommunications Ltd (now GPT) 9 yrs.
(1971 - 81)
After leaving university in 1971, Martin worked with Plessey
Telecommunications Ltd (now part of Siemens) installing and commissioning a
variety of Crossbar (electro-mechanical) and TXE4 (electronic) telephone
exchanges.
In 1981, he joined British Telecommunications PLC, to work
at their research centre at Martlesham Heath, initially on the co-ordination of
the development of the Operating System for their N-ISDN "System X"
processor with the supplier companies Plessey and GEC, and later working on the
earliest feasibility studies of the Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) technique
for the integrated switching and transmission of video, voice and data traffic.
On joining Ascom (then Hasler) in Switzerland in 1987, after
a brief period working on modifications of the Ericsson AXE 10 system for the
Swiss N-ISDN market and writing software for a N-ISDN test tool, he continued
my interest in broadband systems, through the representation of Ascom in the
European RACE (Research and
development of Advanced Communications in Europe) Programme.
He worked mainly in 2 RACE projects: R1022-"ATM
Technology Test bed" and R2061-"EXPLOIT" (Exploitation of an ATM
Technology Test bed). He was the Project Manager of the latter project
(comprising 25 organisations from throughout Europe) from 1991-95. This was the
only one of 100 projects in the RACE Programme to be managed by a non-EU
organisation. The organisation that he was representing at this time was ASPA:
“Association Swiss PTT / Ascom”.
He has just finalised his work as the Project Manager of two
projects in the European ACTS (Advanced
Communications Technologies and Services)
Programme: “DIANA” (IP and ATM) and the follow-on project to
"EXPLOIT", which is entitled "EXPERT - "Experimental
Platform for Engineering Research and Trials". This project is based on
one of the largest ATM-oriented test beds in Europe (Basel), and included a
similar platform located at the KPN (Dutch PTT) premises in Leidschendam. The
EXPERT project is increasingly concerned with attracting users of the new
technology, but also retains a strong interest in developing new equipment,
broadband signalling, and traffic aspects such as how stringent QoS
requirements for certain services can be guaranteed in an ATM-based network
carrying a mix of sources, including Internet traffic.
The platform in Basel is directly attached to the Swisscom
ATM network and via this network to various other broadband test centres
throughout the world. In particular, we enjoy excellent relations with the
Communications Research Centre in Ottawa, Canada, with whom we hold regular
tele-educational "Virtual Classroom" events within the framework of
the G7 / GIBN (Global Interoperability of Broadband Networks) project.
Being the
largest test bed within the EU ACTS Programme, we were often called upon to
take part in prestigious events. Notably, we took an active part in the
distribution of the launch of the EU 5th Framework Programme conference from
Vienna (Nov. 30th - Dec. 1st, 1998). This event (including an
E-Commerce presentation from Basel) was distributed to more than 20 locations
across Europe, to Japan (CRL, Tokyo) and Canada (CRC, Ottawa).
The EXPERT
project consisted of 35 partner organisations, representing the major network
operators in Europe, industries and universities. It had a value of
approximately SFr.34 Million (over 4 years).
Having much
experience of EU projects, and through his management of the EXPERT test bed in
Basel, which was a strategic platform for the whole ACTS Programme, he has been
privileged to serve as the chairman of several ACTS Programme bodies; positions
that would otherwise not have been open to Swiss organisations.
In February
1996, he joined G.A.W. Associates Ltd. This company has specialised in the
management of European projects and also performed “traditional” consultancy in
the areas of IP, ATM and satellite communications. In this respect Martin has
worked recently for the European Space Agency, with the takeover by Energis of
Unisource carrier services, and the Industrielle Werke Basel, analysing the
feasibility of establishing a Telehouse facility.
His current duties include the technical co-ordination of 2
European collaborative research projects in the areas of agent technologies for
the management of UMTS resources, and the mapping of Service Level Agreements
to network requirements for premium IP services.
Lists of some of the recent international conferences in
which he has presented papers or have been on the technical/programme
committees are appended.
